This chart summarizes the Abraham’s family tree, based on what we know from Scripture. I’m always looking for this information and couldn’t find it in one place. I decided to make a chart, combining as much information as I could from my various sources. This is a work in progress. Please contact me if you find errors, omissions or broken links.
From my research, skipping names was common practice in genealogies both in the gospels and in secular records of ancient kings. They can jump from grandfather to grandson because it still preserves the line of descent. Also, names tended to be repeated (sons named after grandfathers, etc) and names may be spelled differently when they are translated from Hebrew into English.
Terah had 3 sons (Gen 11:27-32): Abram (Abraham), Nahor and Haran
Abram (Abraham) married Sarai (Sarah), the daughter of Terah by a different mother (Genesis 20:12)
Nahor married Milcah and had 7 sons including Bethuel (Genesis 22:20-24)
Bethuel fathers Rebekah, the wife of Isaac, and Laban
Laban fathers: Leah & Rachel, the wives of Jacob (Genesis 29).
Haran had 3 children: Milcah, Iscah and Lot.
Lot has 2 daughters (Genesis 19).
Abraham’s Wives & Children
Abraham married Sarai/Sarah (Genesis 12). They had 1 son, Isaac (Genesis 21)
Isaac married Rebekah (Genesis 24) and had 2 sons, Esau and Jacob (Israel) (Genesis 25:19-28)
Abraham took Hagar as his concubine. She had 1 son, Ishmael (Genesis 16). Ishmael had 12 sons (Genesis 25:12-15).
After Sara’s death, Abraham married Keturah. They had 6 children and 7 grandchildren (Genesis 25:1-6).
Jacob’s children (12 tribes of Israel)
Jacob had two wives (Leah & Rachel) and two concubines (Bilhah and Ziplah). Between them they had 12 sons who would become the 12 tribes of Israel. Jacob’s sons are numbered in birth order (Genesis 29-30).
Wife Leah had 7 sons: 1 Reuben; 2 Simeon; 3 Levi; 4 Judah; 9 Issacher; 10 Zebulun; Daughter Dinah
Concubine Bilhah had 2 sons: 5 Dan; 6 Naphtali
Concubine Ziplah had 2 sons: 7 Gad; 8 Asher
Wife Rachel had 2 sons: 11 Joseph; 12 Benjamin. Note: Joseph’s 2 sons, Manasseh and Ephraim inherit Joseph’s portion in the land (Genesis 48:5).
