Generally, the Old Testament book of Joshua may be broken into three main sections:

  • The Book of War: Taking the Land – Chapters 1-12
  • Book of Distribution: Allotting the Land – Chapters 13-21
  • Book of Consecration: Staying in the Land – Chapters 22-24

The Book of War: Taking the Land Joshua 1-12

  • Preparation for War (Joshua 1-5)
    • Charge to War (Joshua 1)
    • Evidence of Canaan’s Spiritual Weakness (Joshua 2)
    • Crossing the Jordan (Joshua 3-4); assurance of the Lord’s presence and of Joshua’s leadership
    • Final spiritual Preparation (Joshua 5)
      • Circumcision
      • Passover
      • Manna ceases
      • Revelation of the Lord of Hosts
  • Campaigns of War (Joshua 6-11)
    • Central (Joshua 6-9)
    • Southern (Joshua 10)
    • Northern (Joshua 11)
  • Summary of War (Joshua 12)

Book of Distribution: Allotting the Land (Joshua 13-21)

  • Doctrine that much land remains (Joshua 13:1-7)
  • Trans-Jordan assigned by Moses (Joshua 13:8-32)
  • Territory assigned to Judah and Joseph at Gilgal (Joshua 14-17)
  • Territories assigned to the rest of the Tribes at Shiloh (Joshua 18-19)
  • Assignment of cities of refuge (Joshua 20)
  • Assignment of cities of Levities (Joshua 21)

Book of Consecration: Staying in the Land (Joshua 22-24)

  • Consecration of tribes of trans-Jordan (Joshua 20)
  • Consecration of rest of tribes in Israel (Joshua 23)
  • Renewal of the covenant (Joshua 24)
