Galatians 4:12-20 Leadership in action

Galatians 4:12-20 marks a change of tone for Paul. Up to this point, we’ve seen him speak as apostle, rebuke as a theologian and argue as scholar — all to warn the Galatians that they are turning to a false gospel. In this — the fourth of of series of 5 arguments for justification by faith alone, Paul appeals to the Galatians as his parent and friend. He appeals to them on the basis of his deep affection and demonstrated concern for them to take his words seriously and return to the true gospel.

The passage breaks down into two sections and in each section he contrasts two attitudes.

In 4:12-16, Paul reminds the Galatians of their attitude toward him and he contrasts how they viewed him before and how they view him now.

In 4:17-20, Paul reminds the Galatians of his attitude toward them and he contrasts his own attitude toward them with the attitude of the false teachers.
