Gospel of John Introduction

This episode kicks off a new season on the Gospel of John. We delve into the what we know about the author, the Apostle John, and review the unique characteristics of this gospel, as compared to the Synoptic Gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke).

In this study, we’re going to focus on how John chose certain aspects of the ministry of Jesus to highlight certain themes. This study will give you a great foundation to go back later and dive deep into each of the stories.

Gospel of John Introduction: Key Points Discussed

  • Authorship: Early church tradition confirms the Apostle John is the author. He refers to himself as “the disciple whom Jesus loved.”
  • Date: Written between 80-85 AD after Matthew, Mark, and Luke.
  • Purpose: To complement rather than repeat content from other gospels. John includes unique material.

About the Apostle John

  • John was one of twelve apostles.
  • John wrote three letters in the New Testament plus the book of Revelation.
  • His brother James was also an apostle.
  • Before following Christ, both James and John were fishermen and were in business with Peter and Andrew, brothers who also became apostles.
  • John had such a close relationship with Jesus that Jesus entrusted John with caring for his mother Mary at the crucifixion.

Apostolic Authority

John was one of apostles of Jesus. Christ gave his apostles authority to preach his gospel and perform miracles as verification.

Distinctions in John’s Gospel

The Synoptic gospels use a two-part structure. They focus first on Jesus’s ministry in Galilee, then on his journey to Jerusalem.

John records multiple trips Jesus made to Jerusalem for the various Jewish festivals. During these visits, his teaching and actions provoke the Jewish leadership, leading to their eventual resolve to execute him.

Insights

Understanding these differences helps us understand how the gospel writers tailored their narratives for their intended audiences and apologetic purposes.
