This list summarizes the Kings of Israel and Judah from the crowning of Saul to the captivity of Judah. I’m always looking for this information and couldn’t find it in one place. I decided to make my own chart, combining as much information as I could from my various sources.
How to read this chart
- Approximate dates: Years are best estimates based on biblical and standard chronologies. Think “circa,” not exact to the month.
- Co-regencies excluded: To keep the chart simple, overlapping father/son co-reigns are not counted separately in the reign length column.
- Good/Bad ratings: These are biblical evaluations drawn from Kings/Chronicles—primarily faithfulness to the covenant, rejection of idolatry, centralization of worship, and responsiveness to God’s prophets. A “mostly” label indicates a mixed record.
- This is a work in progress. Please contact me if you find errors, omissions or broken links.

Solomon’s reign 970 -931 BC
Upon Solomon’s death the kingdom fell into civil war as two of his sons fought for the throne. That war ended in a divided country. The 10 northern tribes became the kingdom of Israel. The 2 southern tribes (Benjamin & Judah) became the kingdom of Judah.
Israel’s capital shifted from Shechem/Tirzah to Samaria, while Judah’s capital remained Jerusalem. Israel fell to Assyria in 722 BC and its people were scattered;
Judah later fell to Babylon in 586 BC, and many were exiled. Under Persian rule some Judeans returned to rebuild Jerusalem and the temple (see Ezra–Nehemiah), but the northern tribes did not re-form a kingdom.
