logos in Greek Philosophy

Logos was a very common word was common in classical Greek. The Greek philosophers defined this term to mean “the principle of order and knowledge that governs all of reality.”

The Stoics defined logos as: “the common law of nature, imminent in the universe and maintaining its unity; the divine fire, the soul of the universe.”

Philo a Jewish philosopher defined it as “the agent of creation.”

While studying this, I learned that the Chinese Bibles translate this word “tao”. As I understand that term and I’m no expert on Chinese, tao is the basic eternal principle of the universe that transcends reality and is the source of being, nonbeing and change.

That tells us Logos meaning something like the ultimate rationale or reason or plan behind the universe. It’s that intelligent purpose that governs and shapes everything in existence.
